A Whale Shark

Hi Room 12 - this is a whale shark and it was sighted near Perth.  The whale sharks do not usually come down to the Perth area.  But some people think because of global warming the sea is getting warmer and the fish are coming here where it is cooler so the bigger fish like this whale shark come too.  Whale sharks are one of the largest fish and are known to be docile.  They eat plankton.

  1. Dear Ms. Wilson,
Hi! This is Room 13. We miss you! When will you be coming back? What has been your favourite part and animal so far? Have you been in the water yet, or are you nervous about seeing sharks? Are there any monkeys in Perth? Is Australia hot or cold? Does it ever snow? What are the fun things for kids and adults to do? We are wondering about the birds, can you send pictures to us? Did you like the beach you were at in January? Have you been to some other beaches?

  2. Hi Room 13,
I was so excited to get your post to my blog. I will be coming back to Canada in December 2013 when you are in Grade 3. Wow I wonder how much you will have grown by then! My favourite part of Australia so far are the beautiful beaches here. The colours of blue of the ocean is amazing. It makes you want to paint a picture, I can imagine Mrs Ashby here sitting by the beach, sketching and painting away ahhhh!! She would be so peaceful and happy! My all time favourite animal still is the koala and as you saw from my photos I was able to hold one. They are very heavy and have sharp little claws to grip and climb trees. I have only put my feet in the water, I am really scared not only of the sharks but they have jelly fish and blue bottle stingers here and they can really hurt if you are stung by one. I think I might need to wear a full body wet suit before I venture into the water.
The monkeys are in the zoo just like Calgary, the only animal you see wild alot are kangaroos. you have to be careful at night time because the kangaroos are attracted to the car headlights and sometimes they get hit on the road. It reminded me of deer in Canada and how we have to watch for them when driving on the highways.
Australia is VERY VERY VERY HOT right now. It is summer here, and it has been one of the hottest summers they have had for a very long time. On some days it has been 42C. And it never snows here in Perth where I am. I have heard on the east coast of Australia in their mountains it sometimes snows but nothing like Calgary. We win the prize I think for snow!!
Kids here are alot like kids in Calgary, like you. They love to play with each other, they play tag games outside. Some of the sports are a bit different like they play cricket which is very different from anything I have seen, also they play footie which looks alot like our soccer. And of course the children take swimming lessons because it is so important for them to know how to swim living so close to the ocean.
The birds are so amazing. Outside my classroom I saw four pink looking parrots sitting in a tree squawking away. I was told they are called Galars but I think they look like parrots. Also sometimes you can hear a kookaburra sing often early in the morning. They make an interesting sound.
I love the beaches, all of them. Last weekend I went to a beach and found these things on the beach that looked like hairy stones, all different round shapes, big and small. I will try to post some photos. They are seaweed, and I have no idea how they washed up on shore in such an interesting shape.
I will try to post some photos tonight for you.
Also my class here in Australia has sent you penpal letters as well as flat kids. In the school where I teach the children all wear uniforms so some of the flat kids they made are them in the uniforms. Also because it is so hot here the children all have to wear a special hat as the sun can make you sick if you outside playing in it.
I miss everyone at Monterey Park especially the boys and girls in Room 13 and Room 12. Keep writing to me and I will do my best to answer your questions. And take pictures if you can of the Australian flat kids so we can share them.

    Love Ms Wilson

    1. Dear Ms. Wilson,
Boy! Talk about winning the snow contest! We just got a HUGE dump of snow! "It is all the way to the top of my boot!" exclaimed Rachel. It just kept coming down yesterday, it snowed ALL day long. Ms. Dryburgh had a hard time driving in it yesterday, but managed to make it to school today. Some of the teachers could not get their cars into the parking lot, but Mrs. Ashby stepped on the gas and slid into her spot. We'll see how it goes getting out tonight. We are planning to take your flat students outside to play in the snow! We will take photos:) See you later, alligator!
Love Mrs. Ashby and her little mice...
