Happy Summer Holidays

Dear Canadian Penpals,

How are you feeling?  We have heard about the floods and are wondering how you are doing?  We were sad to hear about the floods.  We hope you are all safe and okay.

What are you going to be doing on your summer holidays?  What have you been doing at school that is really fun?  We have been doing 3D wooden figure pictures.   We have also been learning about Canada.  In class we have been creating a lot of art.  In art we learned about the artist Piet Mondrien and know he makes art using squares and rectangles.

Tomorrow we are going on an excursion to Cockman House. An excursion is where you go somewhere with your class.  Ms Wilson said you would call them a field trip.  We have been learning about our community and recently we made a map of Mindarie.

Last Friday we had an incursion (that is when a guest speaker comes into the school) and it was called Constable Care.  It is a program where you learn about walking to school safety.  Constable Care teaches us how to walk to school safely.  He uses puppets to teach you how to get to school safely.

We have been reading fairy tales.  What is your favourite fairy tale?  Our favourite fairy tale is The Paper Bag Princess.  We took a survey to find out what our favourite one was and the most tallies was for the Paper Bag Princess.

Well we wanted to wish you a safe and happy summer holidays!!

From your friends in Australia,
Hugs from Ms Wilson

Dear Friends at Monterey Park School

Hello boys and girls,
I am writing you a letter on our blog as I know you have not been at school the last week.  I am so sorry to hear about the floodiing in Calgary.  The boys and girls here have seen the pictures on the news and know many families have had a very difficult time due to the floods.  I think about you often and so do the boys and girls in TA23, our class in Australia.  I am attaching some photos of your flat kids having fun at school here.  Today we are going to write a class letter to you and maybe Ms D and Mrs Ashby can share it with you when you come to school on Thursday.

I want to wish you all a safe and funfilled summer holidays.  When I come back to Canada you will be in Grade 3.  How exciting!!! And I hope to visit each of you in your classes or see you around the school.  Have a super summer boys and girls!!

Hugs and High Fives
Ms Wilson

PS - we did write you a letter but are worried it might not have arrived!!

My First School Holiday

These are termite mounds.  Termites are an insect that like to bury in the ground and they build large mounds like these egg shape rocks.  They were everywhere along the highway in Exmouth.Termites are insects and commonly known, especially in Australia as "white ants", they are only distantly related to the ants.Termites live in colonies that, at maturity, number from several hundred to several million individuals. Termites live in colonies which explore for food sources and environments unavailable to any single insect acting alone. A typical colony contains nymphs (youngsters), workers, soldiers, and several egg-laying queens.

A Whale Shark

Hi Room 12 - this is a whale shark and it was sighted near Perth.  The whale sharks do not usually come down to the Perth area.  But some people think because of global warming the sea is getting warmer and the fish are coming here where it is cooler so the bigger fish like this whale shark come too.  Whale sharks are one of the largest fish and are known to be docile.  They eat plankton.

I went to Freemantle today.  It is near Perth and on the ocean.  Big ships bring items to Perth and Perth sends its products to other countries.  I wonder if any of the ships have grain from the prairies.

I also went a wildlife reserve, like a zoo but the animals are allowed to be free so you walk around and can touch them.

Hello from Australia!

Hello Room 12,

I am finally in Perth Australia.  I had to take three airplanes to get here and it took 25 hours altogether.  A day at school and sleeping at night then waking to get up to go to school, that is how long it took for me to get here.  I went to the ocean and beach today.  I think it was called Scarborough beach, Ms Dryburgh will know if I have spelt incorrectly.  I had to post a photo of Mr Beaver and Ms Moose enjoying the sunshine on the beach.  Happy New Year!!
