These are termite mounds. Termites are an insect that like to bury in the ground and they build large mounds like these egg shape rocks. They were everywhere along the highway in Exmouth.

Termites live in colonies which explore for food sources and environments unavailable to any single insect acting alone. A typical colony contains nymphs (youngsters), workers, soldiers, and several egg-laying queens.
